Links in the Footer

Links in the footer are often used by SEO companies to attempt to help the positioning of a website.

While it is true that these links will not be entirely disregarded, they are likely to be some of the least effective links of your SEO campaign. One of the reasons that this is true has to do with the way that Google determines the importance of each website with regard to specific key terms.

Google wants to provide richly informative results for Internet searchers and they determine whether or not a website is richly informative by judging how many words are on a page, how many of those words are obviously relevant to the topic, what type of words are linked because of being informative topics that people are interested in learning more about and what title tags and heading tags are with the assumption (that must be backed up by the rest of the content) that those heading tags are identifying what information is on the page following that particular heading tag.

Key Phrases in SEO

When a linked key phrase is in the footer of the document, it doesn’t make it appear to be the most relevant, integral part of the page, but rather is more of an obvious add-on, even though in particular cases, it may very well be a very relevant link and resource for the user’s (benefit) experience.

For this reason, when you choose to put links in the footer, you are not hurting your website’s SEO status, but the help you are providing it is less significant than many SEO companies formerly believed and relied on.
