Different Types of Links & SEO Information
2010
Did you realize that there are a variety of different link types?
In this article, I’m going to be providing the official name and technical definition for each type of link, as well as explaining how these various links can have an effect on the SEO campaign for your website.
Types of links are basically going to be defined in two separate sections, one with a stronger focus on the web design aspect of linking and the other with a stronger focus on the SEO aspect of linking, but both sets of information working together in a partnership of informative content for your increased link type and SEO comprehension.
Types of Links in Web Design
There are three basic types of links that you can place within your website. These link types are internal links, local links and global links. All of these link types refer to hyperlinks that are very much like the hyperlink you would use in a Microsoft Word document, in case you are familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite.
It is quite common for individuals, business owners and web development professionals, such as myself, to incorrectly label these various types of links in discussion. I myself have been guilty of this in past articles, but this error is now being corrected.
While it is common for people to describe internal links as being text that is hyperlinked from one page of a website to another website page within that same domain or URL, this is not a technically correct definition. An internal link is actually a link that is directing the user to another spot on the very same page within the website. For instance, if you have linked a couple of words that will just bring the user up or down the page as often occurs.
A local link is actually the correct term for the hyperlinks within a web page that direct the user to a separate page in the same website. The local link is what is commonly referred to when people discuss internal links.
A global link is when the hyperlink is directing the user to a page that is external to the website itself, that is, a page on a completely different website outside of the originating domain name, or website address.
SEO Links from External Locations
The other set of links that we will talk about in this article are SEO links from external locations. These are hyperlinked text that are coming from a website outside of your website and directing their users to click and view one of your website pages.
The number of SEO links or back-links that your website has is a crucial factor in search engine optimization, but there are a wide variety of elements that constitute specifically how helpful each one of those links actually is.
The two different types of links that we are discussing in this section are not actually two different types of links, but rather refer to the properties of each link. These links can either be established as “follow” links or “no-follow links.”
These types of SEO links or back-links provide the most power when the site they are originating from has a high Google page rank and a low Alexa rank. The low Alexa rank signifies popularity of that website and the high Google page rank determines how significantly valuable Google finds this website to be for their customers, the Internet users.
Another extremely important SEO factor regarding these links is whether or not they are coming from web pages that cover topics which are actually relevant to the website that they are linking to.
A thorough comprehension of link types is an absolute necessity for any SEO service provider to have in order to deliver exceptional results to their client companies.
Power of Different Types of Links
Circling back to the topic of those three different link types, the internal links, the local links and the global links here, we are now going to discuss the SEO importance of each of these links.
When considering search engine optimization standards, forget about link juice when it comes to the internal links. However, internal links are still anchor text, so they are not entirely irrelevant.
Local links are actually much more powerful for a variety of reasons than most business owners and SEO companies realize and then to discuss global links…
Global links are a matter that must be handled with extreme care and caution. If you are too generous with your global linkage, you can hurt your website’s page rank. When you do put global links in your site, be sure to do enough other work to your site to compensate for giving away this “link juice.”
