I receive a multitude of SEO news updates on a daily basis. What I discover is that mixed in with good information is a long list of SEO companies who are continuously putting out bad information to mislead the public and to mislead other SEO start-ups. This, I consider to be unethical behavior.
One such SEO newsletter I received this evening made two statements that particularly stood out to me as being incredibly unfortunate. The first was describing web content writing. It laid out the information in such as fashion as to describe businesses as having one of two options. The one was to rank well in search engines and the other was to actually make sales.
What an incredibly misleading picture this painted. It explained that you could either target key words and key phrases or that you could write informative content to interest readers. There are several things that are wrong with this analogy.
First point is that any kind of content, regardless of style, genre, industry, etc. can target key words and key phrases. This means that informative and interesting web content, as well as complete gibberish on a page can all target key words and key phrases. However, the search engines are going to favor the web pages with content that is actually at least informative or eye catching enough to get the readers to spend a little bit of time scanning the page.
There are a variety of details that anyone in marketing should have some sort of an understanding of regarding human behaviors, etc. which will convince a reader to scan a page, rather than to immediately jump off of that page, increasing the bounce rate for that web page of content. Targeting key words / key phrases is never impossible to do within the methodology of creating genuine web content for any well-trained writer/professional.
Secondly, the entire foundation of being able to make those sales is based upon the customer actually being lead to read the web content. If a website is not ranking well in the search engine then how, exactly, are the customers supposed to even know about the company in order to buy anything? Amid the millions of websites, just how shall potential customers find this non-optimized site when the competition is paying attention to where their site shows up in search engine listings?
It is just this kind of misleading content that is one example of a company that is clearly not interested in providing ethical SEO services.
Another example that I read about in this news piece today was that this company actually encouraged SEO companies to report their competition as being spammers in order to attempt to get rid of their competition. It’s like this particular “SEO News” letter was actually attempting to start wars between SEO companies. The old adage of divide and conquer I suppose. However, who wants to ever work with such types of individuals? And I cannot help but think that karma would not only hit those who took the advice, but it must somehow come around to get the writer of that “SEO newsletter.”
Personally for my company and for all of my writing and any encouragement I ever provide anyone with, I will always try to promote businesses helping other businesses, which is supposed to be what our SEO work is actually all about after all….. Everyone needs to make a living, but if we all work together, we will all benefit.
